Launching the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Young Ambassadors Program

Exciting Developments at the Carnegie Tsinghua Center for Global Policy

Father and daughter, Dr. James S.C. Chao and Angela Chao, were excited to visit the Carnegie Tsinghua Center for Global Policy to launch the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Young Ambassadors Program last year. Named in honor of Angela’s mother, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, this initiative is housed within the Carnegie Tsinghua Center’s Young Ambassadors Program.

The late Ruth Mulan Chu Chao dedicated her life to advancing and improving relationships between her birthplace, China, and the United States. Growing up in China during a historically tumultuous time, moving to Taiwan and ultimately to America, she is one of the best examples of perseverance and leadership. Mrs. Chao was also a strong advocate of education and continually stressed the importance of building the next generation of leaders.

The Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Young Ambassadors Program will support two young people, one American and one Chinese, who will be given the opportunity to grow and develop into leaders of tomorrow. They will participate in programs that continue Mrs. Chao’s vision, including spending time at the two Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Kindergartens in Anhui.

The Carnegie Tsinghua Center Partnership

The Carnegie Tsinghua Center’s Young Ambassadors Program is built on the premise that the best way to build trust between East and West is to cultivate understanding between young leaders. The Program equips young future leaders with the opportunity to develop a better appreciation and understanding of each other’s culture and customs, in the best tradition of people-to-people diplomacy.

A Busy Year of Events at the Carnegie Tsinghua Center

The Carnegie Tsinghua Center for Global Policy was very busy in 2017, hosting a number of impactful programs to advance its goals. The center hosted its 5th annual U.S.-China Carnegie Global Dialogue. Following President Trump’s historic visit to Beijing, the dialogue had even more momentum. The program brings together scholars from both countries to engage in a week-long dialogue, strengthening ties between the two countries.

The Distinguished Speakers Program brought together current and former U.S. political leaders for intense dialogue with Chinese leaders from government, academics, media, and business. Participants commended the Carnegie Tsinghua Center for building an atmosphere of trust, where open and candid dialogue can flourish.

The Center hosted a number of former U.S. policymakers to meet with their counterparts in China, including Penny Pritzker, former Secretary of Commerce, and Maurice Greenberg, Chairman and CEO, C.V. Starr & Company, Inc.

The Center marked a major milestone with its China in the World podcast, recording its 100th episode with Stephen Hadley, the former U.S. National Security Advisor. On the world stage, Carnegie Tsinghua Center scholars provided timely and accurate strategic analysis of the most pressing regional and global issues.
